The mantra OM — AUM
The sound OM is the most sacred sound, symbolizing the highest reality and the Universe. Its three components, A‑U‑M, symbolize the Creation of the universe in the absence of passion, the governance of the universe in bliss, and the destruction of the false ego and ignorance on the path to absolute consciousness!
OM was the first manifestation of the unmanifested Creator, which gave rise to the perceived Universe, which originated from the vibration caused by this sound.
OM is revealed in the sound A-U-M as a symbol of the divine trinity: the Body A in the area of the abdomen, the Soul U in the area of the chest, and the Spirit M in the area of the head. These three sounds symbolize three levels of existence — heaven, earth, and the underworld. They also symbolize three states of consciousness — illusion, sleep, and reality.
The sound OM encompasses the three times of day — morning, day, and night — as well as the three human abilities — desire, knowledge, and action.
OM is the sound of the Sun and light. It symbolizes upward movement, the soul’s approach to higher realms.
Chanting OM during practices clarifies the mind, opens and purifies the 9 energy channels, strengthens vital energy, and leads to enlightenment. OM calms the mind, the emotional and physical state, from everything that might distract consciousness from the suprasensory level of perception. Focusing on the pronunciation of OM removes all obstacles on the spiritual path; the mind becomes calm and peaceful.
When you repeat OM, you will feel yourself being filled with purity and all‑pervading light. Those who sing OM acquire a powerful and beautiful voice. Those who chant OM daily possess great power. They have a sparkle in their eyes and light in their faces.
The sound A is yellow in color; it is a property of activity; the sound U is nature, white; the sound M is black, darkness. The divine energies were produced by the sound of OM, the heavens were produced by the sound of OM, and the universe consisting of three worlds with moving and immovable elements was produced by the sound of OM. OM is the arrival and departure, the beginning, movement, and absence. He is the one, shining with millions of suns. All three transient worlds — the emission of the mind, its organization, and the perfect cessation — lead to dissolution.
Repeat OM to cleanse all the karma accumulated previously, destroying all sins — this is the beginning of your perfection. When, over time, you attain absolute radiance, you begin to shine on your own, like the sun when the clouds disperse. The sound OM has the nature of radiance; the mind becomes absorbed in it. OM is a sacred energy channel extending from the first to the ninth energy center. This sacred energy channel is the sound Ham — on inhalation, and the sound Sa — on exhalation, moving inside. This is the path of Liberation.
Realize yourself as part of God. God is truly the one who holds all creation in his hands, who is beyond the reach of thought and beyond description, beyond concepts. Only he is called God who is indivisible in time and space, whose light illuminates everything, who is pure, and who is absolute consciousness. He is the consciousness that stands behind all its parts, that is hidden in everything that exists, that is the essence of everything. He is at the heart of existence and non‑existence. He is the truth that the OM points to. He exists everywhere, just as the nature of a flower is in the flower. This pure consciousness, which exists in you and in everyone else, is the unity and is God. The entire universe is pure consciousness. This is God, this is “everything” that I am; everything is achieved by his grace and from him. A person, while chanting OM, must be inwardly calm, with a controlled mind; he must abandon forbidden and selfish actions and pleasures that arise from the sense organs.
God is not far away and is not inaccessible. One’s own enlightened consciousness is God. All objects emerge from it, and everything returns to it. All things and objects constantly worship it in their own diverse and accessible ways. The consciousness that is thus worshipped in various forms, birth after birth, sends a messenger for inner awakening and enlightenment.
This messenger of consciousness is wisdom. It dwells in the cave of one’s own heart. This wisdom leads to the gradual awakening of one who is bound by ignorance. What is awakened in this way is the inner consciousness, which is the higher consciousness, whose “name” is OM.
He is an omnipresent being. The universe is, as it were, his body. All heads, eyes, hands, etc., belong to him. When this consciousness awakens through wisdom, an inner revelation occurs, the mind disappears, and individual consciousness vanishes. In this terrible ocean of the endless wheel of illusions, only wisdom is the boat that makes it possible to cross this ocean.
What you call the body does not exist. It is only energy. Even the word “dream” is used to illustrate the truth about the illusory nature of the apparent world; in reality, there is no “dream” in infinite consciousness. There is no body, no sleep in it; there is no awakening, no sleep, no dreaming. What exists is emptiness, nothingness, OM. In reality, everything is God — not duality, the One Absolute. There are no distinctions. When everything is realized as the One, the Absolute, there is no sorrow, no illusions. Then it is quite easy to attain the Bliss of Supreme Non-duality. Think of yourself as the foundation of this entire universe; you are the One. Not all people can comprehend this Truth. Only those who have escaped illusion know the secret. Having realized this, you no longer move in any direction. You will unite with the Absolute, just as the space inside a vessel unites with the rest of space.
Like space, which does not move anywhere, you know no movement and become one with OM. Before entering the state of absolute consciousness, it is necessary to contemplate this moving — manifested and immovable — unmanifested world of OM, from which this world arose. The cause of this birth is ignorance, but it disappears when the light of awareness begins to shine. God is the beginning, the middle, and the end; subordinating his amazing energy, he periodically incarnates in human form. He manifests His compassion for people. His mystery, like the radiant fiery OM, is contained in this practice.
The body of the sound OM
There is the trinity of God. The element of Earth and Water is the body of the sound A. The element of Fire and Air is the sound U.
The element of Ether is the sound M
The location of the sound OM
In the middle of the brain shell, like the radiance of the sun, A shines. Inside this, the sound U is located, similar to the shine of the moon. The sound M is also like a flash of lightning. Thus, the three sounds shine, like the Moon, the Sun, and the Ether.
The final stop is OM
The sun shines like the thinnest flame. It's like a cerebral artery through which OM penetrates everywhere. Through the Sun and seventy-two thousand arteries, it bursts through the head and becomes a source of bliss for all people, permeating the entire universe.
OM sound disappearing
And like the sound of a bell fading into silence, let those who seek God allow the sound of OM to dissolve into silence. That in which sound disappears is the highest God.
The abode of the sound OM
All the past, present, and future is truly OM. And that which transcends the three times is also truly OM.
All of humanity, while awake, is the sound A, since the filling of everything comes first. He who knows this attains the goal of all desires and becomes the first. While dreaming, one is the sound U, due to perfection and the intermediate position. He who knows this increases the flow of his knowledge and becomes equal. There is no one in his lineage who does not know God. While in deep sleep, there is the sound M, due to its commensurability with other states or its ability to absorb previous states.
He who knows this is commensurate with everything and becomes a source of absorption. That which lies beyond ordinary practice, which represents the extinction of diversity, the gracious, non‑dual — this is OM. He who knows it in this way enters into God through God Himself.
The identity of the sound OM
The identity of the sound OM with the sound A becomes a resemblance to the filling. When the identity of the radiant with the sound U is recognized, perfection clearly manifests itself. Upon achieving the identity of the radiant with the sound U, an intermediate position emerges.
The identity of the sound OM with the sound A is comparable to other states, and both are equally capable of absorbing previous states. He who, with firm conviction, knows the common similarity that appears in three states, is a great sage, truly worthy of the admiration and reverence of all beings.
The sound A leads to the “Universal,” while the sound U leads to the “Radiant,” and the sound M leads to the “Conscious.” For one who lacks measure, there is no movement.
Eight forms of the sound OM. The sound OM consists of eight subtle syllables, having eight forms.
1. A
2. U
3. M
4. point, sound decay
5. subtle sound
6. time or emptiness
7. what is beyond you
8. what is beyond everything.
It allows you to transcend this worldly existence. Know that only the eighth form leads to God. Having attained OM, you should no longer think about anything else. You should focus your mind on OM. OM is God, devoid of fear. For one who has become firmly established in OM, there is no longer any fear. For OM is the lowest and highest manifestation of God. There is nothing before it, there is nothing inside it, there is nothing outside it, and there is nothing after it — OM is indestructible. For OM is truly the beginning, the middle, and the end of everything. Having known OM in this way, one attains it immediately. One should know OM as the Creator, who dwells in the hearts of all. Having realized the all‑pervading OM, the wise one no longer grieves. Immeasurable, of infinite measure, extinguishing duality, gracious — this is how OM is known.
OM PRACTICE
Isolate yourself in a quiet place, sit down, close your eyes, and try to completely relax your body and mind. Choose the correct posture:
- sit on the floor and place the heel of your left foot under your anus, so that it presses firmly against the perineum;
- place your right foot on top of the left one so that the genitals are between the feet, and the right heel is near the pubic bone;
- the toes of both feet should be fixed between the calves and thighs;
- men should carefully ensure that the pressure on the genitals does not cause pain. The back should be straight.
Concentrate at the point between the eyebrows, at the 8th energy center, and try to make your consciousness fall silent. Repeat OM until your mind achieves perfect calm. The full disclosure of OM is read on the exhale; the breathing should be even and measured. The sound should vibrate. The sounds must be pronounced in a sing‑song manner and in one key. Begin to repeat OM, associating it with the ideas of infinity, eternity, and immortality. When the sound M is heard, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Attention is focused on the sound. OM can be pronounced in three ways – aloud, in a whisper, and mentally. Pronouncing it aloud is an influence on the physical body. Whispering is working with the energy flows of the soul body. The most powerful influence is exerted by pronouncing the sound OM mentally – this is working with the subtle human bodies of the spirit.
Singing mentally and aloud in the lotus position:
• Inhale AAAUUUMMM, exhale AAAUUUMMM; you can sustain the sound on any of the sounds A, U, or M, depending on which of the physical, mental, or spiritual centers requires deeper interaction. Sing from 9 to 108 times.
• Inhale OOOOOOOOM, exhale OOOOOOOOM, since the sound AUM merges in singing into the sound OM. Sing from 9 to 108 times.
OM is also very blissful to chant in the company of like‑minded people. During chanting, it is necessary to get into resonance with other voices. With good concentration, the effect of feeling space arises, since the sound itself is a manifestation of the energy of space. Repeat OM with the feeling that you are infinite and all‑pervading. Feel OM. Simply repeating OM will not bring the desired result. Feel that you are a pure, perfect, all‑knowing, eternal, and free Absolute. Feel that you are absolute consciousness and infinite, unchanging existence. Every part of your body should vibrate powerfully with these ideas. This feeling should persist throughout the day. Practice regularly and consistently with sincerity, faith, perseverance, and enthusiasm — and you will achieve enlightenment!
